MS software timebombs are NOT what they used to be. Once the time expires you won't be "geniune" but you can still use the OS.

Standard is around 700 bux, enterprise (clustering) is around 1500 or so.

Well he can either pay for it (to be legal) OR he can use the trial (which is legal).

An expired trial edition is not legal. Read the EULA.

Well it is legal for the first 180 days, then he can reload it =)


Some other options are:

1. Buy a tech-net subscription (sometimes there are coupons to get sub even cheaper)

or

2. Buy a legitimate OEM copy


Good luck on your OS building...... and I would get Windows 2008 R2 since it has replaced W2k8

I don't know Rob's plan for the OS, but the EULA for the trial edition also strictly limits it use to "You may use the software only to test, demonstrate, and internally evaluate it." It also prohibits the re-installation of the software.

Tech-net subscriptions are the same thing. You may only use the software for evaluation purposes.
