This was just a carpool lane ticket. I do own up to it, I will pay but the fine is just massive so had to rant. It's just shocking that it's that high, as my expectation is <$400. At the end of the day it is what it is. Lesson learn, time to move on.

can't hurt to try pleading no contest in court. That's how I've always had my fines reduced. Although I guess from the sounds of it things have changed a bit since then. I havent gotten a ticket in over 4 years so
