Default Why do gas stations care what I use the air hose for?

I was at a gas station filling up, and I was checking under the hood. I noticed a couple of leaves in there and I didn't want to reach in with my hand to remove the leaves, so I took the air hose and blasted a couple of shots of air in there to blow the leaves out. This guy from the station walks over and tells me: "The air hose is for tires only, not for under the hood." So I closed the hood and checked my tires.

But I don't understand why they should care what the air is used for. Air is air, whether it goes into the tires or into the air, what does it matter to the gas station? And in case you are thinking that my leaves are messing up an imaculate gas station, that is not the case. The station is in the same neighborhood and they have more leaves there than the few that I added, besides, my leaves went under the car and could not be seen anyway. And it is not like I just went in there to use their air, this is a gas station that I buy gas from regularly, and they have seen my car many times (but the guy that came over is new). I've gone in there many times with my computer and used their air hose to blow the dust out of the computer and they have never said a word. But now I am so upset with this that I may not go back for a while, except to use their air for my tires.

Did this gas station also have service bays? If they did, then they use the same air reservoir for their airtools and blowing leaves uses a lot of air quickly as opposed to topping up a tire.
If they didn't, then .............

Thanks, xviper. Now I don't feel so bad about it. Yes, they do have a service garage.

Was the air they kind you drop money in or was it free ?
If you paid for it shouldn't you be able to use it anyway you want ?

It was a "free" air hose.

This guy was just being a TOOL! Where is the station? We should get a group and go clean out our engine compartments.

they can still charge for air, but you can ask the cashier for a quarter to start it up.
