The ground was so uneven it was kind of scary.
Here are some (IMO) rather interesting photographs:

Check out the cracks on Summit Road.

Notice that earthquakes occurred yesterday all along the Pacific plate boundary from Northern Alaska all the way down to the coast of Guatemala. The Gilroy quake was one of the last of the group. Apparently we should've seen it coming.

In '89 I lived in San Jose and was at work when it hit. Went home to find one broken window, TONS of broken china, dishes etc. and all my booze bottles broken on the floor. The house smelled like a bar on Friday night. My dog was in the house and went bezerk.

We had five quakes in Alaska yesterday, and three so far today. No damage as they are all pretty deep (15-20 miles) and around 1.5 - 3.0 magnatude. That really is good news, as the energy is being released in small (but frequent) amounts instead of one big jolt (ala. the Good Friday quake in '64 at 9.2 magnatude )
I got the following email from my brother regarding the Gilroy quake last night:
"As you might have heard on the news, at 10:00:29 PM (Pacific Time) the
Bay Area got hit with a "significant" earthquake. I just wanted to send a
note out and let you know that the term "significant" pretty much just means
"a bunch of people felt it." Here in Menlo Park (a few scant blocks from the
USGS Western Region offices,) we felt a little swaying and heard some
bottles on top of the fridge rattle. The cat was woken from her slumbers,
but that was about it. Reports from the rest of the bay area indicate that
people have been shaken mildly, but not stirred. There are reports that
attendees at a San Jose Shark's hockey game were "violently shaken," but
I've seen how Shark's fans down beer, and my guess is that they were just a
little unsteady after one too many silver bullets."
