rick, some parts of the country are a little rougher than the silicon valley. I'm from tacoma Wa, and trust me, some places there would warrant a gun in the car... some people are ignorant and when it comes to protecting yourself/family, you only have your self to rely on. Like the dude said in that post, it only takes one ignorant drunk to ruin your day.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to pack a gun if you are driving in the mountains late at night. Trust me on this one.

In California you're 33% more likely to be hurt/killed by a car than a gun. That was shocking to me.

You might like to see this - http://www.datamasher.org/mash-ups/f...vehicle-deaths

Here's another shocking stat:

- There are 700,000 physicians in the United States.
-There are 120,000 accidental deaths in the United States caused by physicians every year, and the accidental death percentage per physician is 17.1%.
-There are 80 million gun owners in the United States.
-There are 1,500 accidental deaths from guns every year, regardless of age group, and the accidental death percentage per gun owner is 0.001875%.

This means your doctor is 9,000 times more likely to kill you than a legal gun owner. Watch out for the doctor!

Rick review this - http://www.shouselaw.com/firearm-offenses.html should be helpful.

Would be curious to see the numbers when we factor in non-accidental deaths by gun/doctor. Something tells me the percentages would equal out a bit more.

I dunno - just seems a bit extreme in most parts of the USA...as I posted in that thread, I think if it gets that bad that I feel the need to carry a gun I probably should/could have avoided being there in the first place.

Lewis, I've been to Tacoma many times and it's not that bad....haha I'm from Chicago and attended a college in a REALLY bad part of the south side (think projects) my Freshman year and that place is rough. Even then I never thought of packing a weapon. That could be partially due to our student union always packed with 3 types of police (CHA - housing police, CPD - Chicago PD, and Campus police)

Oh like that dude said about one ignorant drunk - I would probably flea or do anything but pull a gun on him. I learned a long time ago that if you planned to pull a gun, you had better be ready to use it and I would not want to have anyone's death on my hands. Too many civil suits and other issues with shooting anyone right or wrong. If you kill the guy that's bad, if you maim or injure him for life, that's probably even worse.

I will show my wife the physician stats - she works in medicine but yes I read that before about medical accidental deaths and those are scary in itself! I spend a good deal of time in and around hospitals and all I can say it really makes you thankful for just being healthy trust me on this one. Even the routine C-section has pretty high risk of infection for a procedure many people think is routine.

thanks for the links and stats, time for me to do some reading I guess
