Chevron with Techron, baby. I only wish it wasn't the 91 octane crap they pump into all of California.

on the previous posting about Shell coming in second to worst...this is not the first time I've heard bad things about Shell. I've heard other say that their mechanics tell them NOT to use Shell because they suck so bad and dirties their engines and such. So what's the deal? They're suppose to be huge and charge some of the highest prices (even more than Chevron) for their gas. What gives?

I personally ONLY use Chevron for my s2k. In fact, in my neighborhood, there is a Shell and a Chevron directly across the street from each other and the Shell habitually charges more than the Chevron.

Now, on my beater (94 Prelude VTEC), I only use Quick Stop 87 octane ($1.17-$1.19/gal in Castro Valley). Unless I can find something even cheaper. Funny thing is I don't notice any difference between the 87 and 92 octane on my Prelude.

You won't notice the benefits of a better octane on an engine that won't appreciate it... and Iv'e also noticed that you won't appreciate a higher octane unless you use it continually. I talked to a engine engineer from GM and he said that it is best to stick with one octane of gas... regardless of what you "think" is better " once ina while". Changing octanes is what leads to pinging etc. For my stook... I'll just go with Chevron 91. I've always been a Chevron man for all my cars and I've always gotten better mileage than my bros AND better engine performance.

Peace Out.

I would strongly recommend AGAINST using Union 76. There fuel has contained alcohol for the past year. Most other brands in CA still use MTBE as the oxyginate.

Alcohol has less BTUs, is hygroscopic (attracts and retains water) and damages fuel systems. Most modern fuel systems are designed to withstand a certain percentage of alcohol, but the moisture retained by the additive can promote corrosion as well.

The real PITA is there is no real good reason that we have to have oxyginate additives at all.
