Last night on my way home from work, I was exiting off of the freeway. At the end of the freeway, the right hand lane merges with the street running parallel to it. The guy in front of me had plenty of room to go, and I saw a car coming out from under the underpass, so I figured I'd sit and wait for him to pass before going, even if it meant waiting a tad too long.

The car in front of me chickened out and slammed on his brakes (even though the car hadn't even crossed the intersection yet). Because I was still in motion, but already braking, I hit him.

The impact wasn't very hard.. but it looks like he will probably need a new middle section for his bumper (Rav 4) and a new spare tire cover, since the impact broke off the lock at the bottom. We're going to settle this out of insurance, since I really don't want my premiums raised...

The most depressing part is that S2000's face is kind of scuffed up. The hood is just slightly bent, you can barely tell unless you're REALLY looking, but there is a slight gouge on the bumper really close to the badge. I'm quite depressed.

Oh yeah, and I feel dumb. That makes it even worse.

Sorry to hear. It really sucks.
I hate it when people make reactions like that.
Luckily it wasn't any worse.

More bad news! The guy called me back and said his wife is forcing him to go through insurance. Even though the impact was less than 10 mph, she says that in the future she could have whiplash or something.

Shucks M, sorry to hear that. My partner in crime themaniam just got T-boned by a 2003 Passat driven by a 7 month pregnant woman on Pine and Powell yesterday... His car looks pretty bad... why don't you ask the Rav 4 guy to bring his car to my friend's shop. My friend will give Mr. Rav4 an adjustment and you will know if it's worth it to go through insurance or not. You might also want to tell Mr. Rav4 that though he is a victim, his insurance might get jacked up too!!!

That almost sounded like a thinly veiled threat.

Thank you for the kind words, Ev. I tried to reason with the guy and let him know it may not be worth it... the guy said that if he had been the only one in the car, he wouldn't care and would just let me pay for his damages. But it's his wife that's forcing him to go through insurance because she said "What about me? What if I am injured from this and it doesn't show up until days or weeks later?"

If you ask me, I smell potential insurance fraud
