Default Wet Thunderhill track day May 27

Had a very wet Thunderhill track day with Hooked On Driving last Thursday May 27. In the advanced group 2nd session, I was third out behind a dark blue '10 GT3 RS (gorgeous!) and a 997 GT3. Lots of standing water and rivers running through at T6, T7, T8, T15, and along the back and front straights. The two GT3s had pulled out of my site on the back straight during our 2nd lap (my Dunlops only had 4/32 in the back making things quite squirelly over the rivers). The ominous red flag came out as I entered T14, it was the GT3 RS into the wall out of T15. A real bummer, the driver (unhurt) seems a great guy, really involved in the Porsche Norcal tracking community. Looks like it's totalled (went airborne when he hit the wall but didn't roll). He believes his HANS and harness saved him from injury (a lesson stock folks like myself can learn from!), and the track day insurance he bought for the 4-day weekend (HOD and Audi Club) should keep him financially whole.

That was the only real mishap, with 6 x 20-25m sessions (including the shortened one) and only about 30 cars total for 3 run groups. First 4 sessions were very wet, but the last 2 were dry (that track dries QUICK). Fun times, can't wait until my next track day July 2!

"He believes his HANS and harness saved him from injury "

Can you clarify what HANS is? Thanks

I understand a HANS only works with a harness, that it's not functional with stock seat belts. Is this true, or is there a version (or similar device) that would help with the stock belts?
