Default wanted to borrow: factory ball-joint separator

07MAC-SL00200 is the factory part number.

Installing new tie-rod ends.

I went to Pepboys to borrow a tie-rod end puller but I'm not sure it will work:

This part looks like it might work:

They look like they'll both work.

The service manual mentions that the tool needs to have an operning 28mm or larger. The top tool (the one pepboys had) has an opening less than 20mm.

I just went out and measured the diameter of the part of the ball joint that the tool would need to span and it's ~27mm. So yeah, a 28mm tool would be req'd.

Are you sure you're not measuring for two different openings?
You have the area of the knuckle and the actual opening of the tool where it go around the shaft of the ball joint itself. It seems like you may be confusing these two openings.

If you're replacing them then is a tool really necessary? Stick a pitchfork in there to apply some pressure and take a hammer to the knuckle where the ball joint goes in to it.

Update on this. I used my pneumatic cut-off tool to enlarge the opening and that worked fine. We'll see if Pepboys takes it back ;-)

To bad I didn't see this before the site went down. I have the factory tool...it works like a charm.
