I'd actually like to get started in autoX. Last year there was several organized events in Monterey, but that's kinda far. Any places closer to the actual bay area? 1.5 hours aways...maybe?

You can check out Solo 2 SF area events here

http://www.sfrscca.org/solo2/cgi-bin/sched...xt_three_months

Some spots are candlestic park, golden gate fileds and other places near the Bay.

NASA is a good place to start if you are here up in norcal. Their events tend to be pretty crowded becasue they are one of the cheapest, but the instructors are good for beginners. A lot of people here go NASA events.

As a beginner, total track time isn't what is important, quality instructors are.

I've done three track days (MR2) with Bonnie TEAM Racing

The core is made up of Miata's 50% other 50% are mixed from 911, Vipers, Vetts,...

They do provide instruction for free. Its a great group not too many big egos and usually pretty reasonable on the price too.

Good luck!

NASA HPDE (High Performance Driving Experience) is the way to go...
You'll get good instructors and pleanty track time to get experience...
The more track time you put in the better you become...

I also recomend doing some GO KARTING as it will give you some of
the intensity of driving on track for more than just a few minutes.

If you guys are really interested, I know of an event where you
pay $75 for track and instructor... They will teach you how to handle
your car and show you how to power slide around turns some what like
drifting, how to follow the line and how to take the turns... Part of
the morning's instructions include an Auto X track to teach you how
to maximize speed and lower your time going around the cones ect....
At the end of the class you will receive a certificate which counts
towards getting your racing license if and when you get to that level.
These cerificates are also helpful in lowering your car insurance rates.

In the afternoon its "Open Track" ... For those that are new to the term,
it means just that... Passing is allowed anywhere on the track and its open to all.

If you are just begining, I don't recomend the open track portion, plus
its another $100...

BTW, this is not NASA and it's not HPDE, for those that want to know.

If there is enough interest shown, I'll post all related info.

So I want to start taking my car to the track and wanna know where is a good place to start. I was looking through the NASA and got kinda confused, there was a little too much going on on the website. I took a look at Thunderhill and the price for them is $235 for the school. Just wanted some input from you guys any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks

-Ken
Hey Ken,

I started off going to the Thunderhill run track days. They had really great instructors, lots of track time and they setup the track to make it even safer. I moved over to NASA's HPDE program shortly after and found it even more fun! Other that HPDE 1 you don
