Visiting San Fran for the first time
hey people,
i'm looking for opinions on how to spend a few days in san fran. where do you all take your out-of-town guests? people have recommended taking the guided bus tours, visiting chinatown, and doing the alcatraz tour. i'm looking for something a little off the beaten path like your favorite restaurant that few people know about. anyways i'll be visiting during the last week in october.
thanks,
-ric

This place is pretty cool, is on the Peninsula, about 20min south of SF. I've eaten here 2 times, it's on a hill with a cool view of the bay area.
What type of sight seeing were you planning to go to? Museum, Scenic Drive, or whatever your in to.
Hopefully this little tidbit will help.

try the normal stuff...golden gate bridge, ghiradelli square, alcatraz, union square, twin peaks. you can actually cover a lot of site in one day if you have a car because sf is so small. there's plenty of restaurants in san francisco but one small one i like is a little burmese restaurant called "Burma Superstar" on Clement St. @ 4th ave in the Richmond District. always a wait so get there early. they serve really good burmese food..sort of a cross between indian and chinese... you might want to try to visit the marina district, coit tower, and hang out at north beach at night where there's more stuff going on.

Stay away from Union Square, Alcatraz, Pier 39 and any of the other tourist traps like China Town if you want to really experience SF. (Twin Peaks is cool, though.)
You have to drive through the Castro and the Tenderloin. Make sure your passenger has a camera. Where else can you get a pic of a leather clad midget walking even funnier than normal? Fort Funston is great night or day and get your ass on a $7 rental row boat at Stowe Lake:

Whatever you do, you have to rent a car (you should opt for Nav). Even if you've driven in big cities, the roads are pretty crazy and it's a blast to drive on the streets of SF. Get out to Haight/Ashbury, too. It's pretty dirty, but most of the people who look disgusting and stink are actually rich kids from the suburbs so you'll be safer than you think.
One of the best places for Sushi is Godzilla. It's always busy, but at least you can order a beer while standing around:

Their spicy tuna rolls are ragin'.
My favorite place for Japanese food is Ichiraku, though. They bring you enough freebies (spicy fish soup, funky japanese salads and sometimes a killer crab hand roll) to fill you up, there's usually a table available, it's EXTREMELY reasonable and the sushi is some of the best I've had.

For a little more upscale of a dinner, I'd recommend Elite Cafe (BBQ shrimp appetizers and Blackened Filet kick ass). I have not had a more memorable dining experience anywher in the world that was better than the tasting menu at Rubicon (owned by DeNiro and Robin Williams).
If you want to hang out at night, Ruby Sky, the Bubble Room (is it still open?) and Cafe DuNord are pretty cool.
