I'm guessing you said "damuho" when that happened

Actually, I exclaimed something much more obscene. "My S" was dormant for 1 week!

I just got my own rear hub related problem taken care of at Larry Hopkins Honda in Sunnyvale. I've had the clicking for a couple of years but figured it was just the brake pads shifting. Eventually I started getting a single creak when changing direction. Suddenly one night I heard a repeated squeak once per wheel revolution when coasting down. There is a Honda tech note / service news on this one, # 1-05. The fix was to "remove rear axles. Apply grease between hub and mating surfaces and the CV joints. Reassembled..."

That was according to the invoice but I think what they did was just disconnect the hub from the axle and grease that, not the inboard end or the CV joint. At least that was what I understood from a quick look at the tech note and talking with the service adviser.

How much did they charge you for that? Mine's been getting more and more frequent. At first it was just every now and then and I also thought it was just the brakes shifting but now it does it even when i'm coasting then suddenly put power down.

you'd have to pull the hub from the bearing, way harder than pulling than pulling the axle off. The hub is pressed into the bearing inner race.

1) It was free. I still had about 2 weeks left on my warranty.

2) Mac, I was thinking they would pop a ball joint and slide the spindle assembly off the end of the axle to get at the mating surface. At that point I suppose it would be pretty easy to pull the axle out of the differential I guess. That's what you do to take out the axle, right?

But -- when you pull the axle out of the differential, does that break a seal and allow differential oil to leak out?

No. The diff oil level is below the opening of the output shafts.

Good - I remember losing transaxle fluid when we pulled an axle on a Civic.
