So, I thought the tire shops go with the Costco business model: charge for tire only; free mounting and balance. Apparently, that's not the case.

Guys, let me rephrase the question. I want to know if there is any route that can beat the price of the "tirerack route":
1) buy from tirerack.com, pay for shipping but pay NO sales tax.
2) ship to your favorite tire place. Have them mount and balance for $20 per tire.

Is that best that I can hope for? Or is there a place in San Jose where:
(tire + tax*tire + mount) < (tirerack + shipping + mount)?
If you trust the America's Tire "monkeys" as Vu might call them -- they'll price match any tires shipped online.

I think it's cheaper just to invest a little more and get free flat repair and lifetime tire rotation. Flat repair these days are getting expensive.

In 17" Direzza S2000 size...

Tire rack + no tax + shipping is cheaper than a Tire Rack price match+ 8.25%+no shipping by $2. So it really doesn't matter where you get the tires... it matters who puts the tires on.

Tire Rack still has a presence on this forum... I would say give your business to them. Just have Tire Rack drop ship to wherever you want to install and call it a day.

... and NOT America's Tire.

VEX has brand new equipment and can mount and balance quick. I've replaced my track tires there a couple of times. They did a good job and were reasonably priced.
