Regular custom plates are additional $39 or $41 a year... It is required to surrender your current plates, if you don't have one or both due to what ever reasons like lost, stolen, damaged. DMV may require you to file a police report to state the reason of why you don't have your plates.. When I did mine, I paid whatever fee online, DMV sent a notice and I went to pick it up along with surrendering my current plates.. New reg stickers were included.. The best time to apply for custom plates is the same time your reg is due.. You'll save the first years extra fee..

is there a site where you can play with custom plate(letters/etc to see if its taken or not?)
also is there a one time fee you have to pay for a custom plate? or is it just the annual fees of owning it?

Its stated on the site when you start to create your custom plate as the prices vary depending on the style of a custom plate you choose. I believe mine is $39/yr
