Regular custom plates are additional $39 or $41 a year... It is required to surrender your current plates, if you don't have one or both due to what ever reasons like lost, stolen, damaged. DMV may require you to file a police report to state the reason of why you don't have your plates.. When I did mine, I paid whatever fee online, DMV sent a notice and I went to pick it up along with surrendering my current plates.. New reg stickers were included.. The best time to apply for custom plates is the same time your reg is due.. You'll save the first years extra fee..

its like $10 more annually(mine was $30 compared to $20 if i remember correctly)

is there a site where you can play with custom plate(letters/etc to see if its taken or not?)

also is there a one time fee you have to pay for a custom plate? or is it just the annual fees of owning it?
The annual fee is more than $20.. From what I remember it's around $40's.. The one time fee is around $50's. You can go to the official DMV website to apply for personalize plates.. It also checks the availability of it.. You pay online when ordering also

I believe mine has been $35 extra annually.

The worst part of this whole process is having to wait 3+ months for the plate to arrive!

Its stated on the site when you start to create your custom plate as the prices vary depending on the style of a custom plate you choose. I believe mine is $39/yr

I heard that the fire fighter plate is the cheaper alternative of the 11-99 foundation...
