Default For those who have their plate custom

So i want to get a custom plate for my S2000, and was wondering after you purchased the custom plate, they mail it to you? pick up at dmv? then after that what happen to your current plates? ex: (6DCV123). Or do you have to go back to dmv and have them register on the car you would like to put on.

Thanks.

In New York, you cut them up and throw them in the trash. Not sure what your state requires.

I think it varies per state, but for me in Arizona its very simple. I go online to renew my registration by entering my VIN and some other stuff and enter in that I want a custom plate. After I placed my order and paid, they sent me new tags for my current plate, and when my custom plate was made (they say 4-6 weeks), they sent it to me in the mail with new tags.

In California you can either go online or go to the DMV to order your custom plate. It takes like 2-3 months to get it. They send the plate and your new tags together. Your old plate you can throw away or keep if you want. They don't want it

In California at RWC DMV, I needed to drop off my old plates to exchange for the new registration sticker to put on my new plate. I guess I could have just said "I dont have the old plates" (lost/stolen/etc), but I just figured it was best to follow the instructions I was given.

Yup, same here. My process was I ordered it online, received a notification they were ready for pick up. I picked them up with my old plates ready to exchange & they will give you the registration sticker along with your new plates.

When your annual registration fees come up, you will see the additional fee for the custom plates added on top of whatever else is needed to pay.

its like $10 more annually(mine was $30 compared to $20 if i remember correctly)

is there a site where you can play with custom plate(letters/etc to see if its taken or not?)

also is there a one time fee you have to pay for a custom plate? or is it just the annual fees of owning it?
