They Make How Much?

[QUOTE=jasonw,Jun 21 2005, 06:15 PM] You can probably figure it out going by an overtime rate of 1.5X(I guess it would be higher for holidays and depending on union contract.) You can figure out the max though going by the 1.5x rate and a salary based on 2000 hrs/yr:

My math sucks but how did you figure max OT hours again?
hourly rate = (total pay - overtime pay)/2000
OT Hrs = overtime pay/(rate *1.5)
or OT Hrs = overtime pay/(((total pay - overtime pay)/2000) *1.5)
If they manage to get triple time, you just divide the max hrs in half...
Exempt employees(Like the people at Electronic Arts) are not eligible for overtime unless they have a union contract. Doctors tend to be exempt too so, I'm thinking that Tam Bui is in a union(He could probably do at least as well at a private hospital though).

Well I speak from experience ..Because I use to be a Correctional officer at SQ ..If you think $66000 a year is to much money then go do the job for a few years and get back to me..And I will be the first to say teachers are under paid!!! But dont talk about a job till you have done it..It is easy to monday morning some one when you sit in a warehouse..And as for the over time..remeber people they did not give them the money for free..they worked for it!! This is what the papers dont tell you...If you have some one that worked alot of over time and made a ton of money ..it does not cost the state more money because that person is working in a postion that is open and it will cost more to have that postion filled with a full time person because they have to pay for all the benfits plus salery..If you take a full time Correctional officer postion that makes $66000 and leave it open it will cost you about $99000 a year to fill it with over time..But if you fill the postion it will cost around 105K a year...This is done all around the State ..It saves them money every year..But people read papers and go oooooooo my god look at what the cops in Oakland make or how much the Correctional officers make..

a little overtime isn't bad, but when you're talking about working 20 to 40+ hours more per week, I'm not sure that's healthy. costwise it may make some sense to pay overtime vs hiring another person, but it seems like productivity wouldn't be the same. I mean, if you're working on your 14th hour of the day, would you be as alert as someone who's doing the second shift and working their 6th hour?

Your right working alot of over time does take a toll on the body!! and this is done more than people know, By firefighters, cops and so on...My grandfather was an Oakland cop for 20 years and was dead at age 54..Thats why it makes me mad when people bag on what cops, Correctional officer, Firefighters and so on $$make..If any onw out there thinks it to much money go do any of the jobs and get back to me after 5 years!!

I got nothing against people that get overtime. And I hear it actually works out pretty good for cops and firefighters who's pension is actually based on their total earnings. I know a cop in SF and I think their pension is like 90% of their final 10 year average. Now if they are doubling their salary with OT and retiring on 90% of that, that could be comfortable...
Hopefully, most of these people are getting some sleep in during their shift...
