Default Is there supposed to be oil..

So my GF's 91 Civic LX has been acting up lately, I posted a thread a while back, and it had gotten progressively worse. So today I changed the plugs and wires, and so far all is well.

BUT there was oil all over the old plugs.. this isn't normal, is it?

If it isn't, what's the problem? I don't think blown head gasket or piston rings as it doesn't blow blue smoke

Any ideas?

If there is oil around the top of the plugs, usually the rubber seal in the value cover gasket for the spark plug tube is either bad or wasn't seated properly last time the valve cover was put on.

Could be all of the above honestly.

First things first, do a compression test.

Then, a leakdown test.

Cracked rings will leave a constant blue smoke though, so i doubt it's that. valve cover plug seals, as Vu mentioned, COULD be bad, but it's not that common on D series motors. If the head gasket was blwon, the car wouldn't idle properly.

My conclusion is with Vu on this.

How much would it cost to do at your shop, Jeff?

I don't feel like effing with the valve cover .

Well it used to not idle properly.. but then when I changed the plugs/wires it went from almost dying to just idling REALLY low (500rpm). Also, one of the spark plugs was barely tightened down, so that could have caused the shakey idle and bucking of the car.

But on her way to bart after, she said it smelled like something was burning?

Did she happen to look at her water temp gauge when the smell of burning civic started?

Of course not . But I know it's not that.. because less than 20k ago she had a complete overhaul..

New alternator, water pump, thermostat, all the belts, timing chain, everything a 100k service would need she got done.

Timing belt you mean

Honestly, just follow my steps, do the compression test first, if you don't see a problem with that, do a leakdown after that.

Why not just pull off the valve cover and check for yourself?

I used to build single cams on a stool in my 10'x10' backyard in my apartment, it isn't that hard. If you need help, just bring it to my house and we can take a look at it.

Don't hate .

I don't have a compression tester, and I don't know how to do a leakdown test.

If you aren't doing anything this weekend that'd be cool

I can do the compression test at my house but not the leakdown, I don't have the unit to do that.

I can take a look at it for you for sure, Dale will be there too, he's my right hand man for backyard engine building LOL
