Tesla and Toyota.. I didn't see it coming..
It was announced today that Toyota will be going into a joint venture with Tesla at the NUMMI plant for electrical vehicle assembly.

I don't believe most employees @ Tesla knew this was coming, or they did a heck of a job enforcing a gag order. I was in a meeting with a design engineer until late last night, leaving around 8:30pm, and the building was being redone in Palo Alto at a feverish pace (paint, official building sinage, carpet, the works within the stretch of a few days). He didn't know much himself about why there was an event planned today with so much work being done so quickly... I had a feeling there was something wierd going on when I saw Toyota guys signed in before myself in the log yesterday.
What the hell am I doing at Tesla? No I don't work for them. I'm with one of a few firms that helps design and partially supplies the automation equipment for nearly every industry. Everything from HDD test cells (WD, Hitachi, Seagate, etc.), including manufacturing automation for automotive companies (for example, BMW exclusively uses us in their manufacturing plants, the A123 Battery plant -used in the Chevy Volt- in Michigan was specified with our help). Having a Bay Area grown company also manufacturing in the same area is just plain awesome. So.. I'm a bit excited.. !
As of last night (5/19), the design guys and myself thought the final assembly plant was going to be in Hawthorne (Southern California). Boy was this a suprise. Funding for the plant was originally planned from the DOE ATVDP.
If there are design engineers looking for a job that may have worked with body panels, FSAE aero design, Hybrid Vehicle Design, vehicle manufacturing, etc.. , this is a good opportunity.
