Default Store recommendation for fluids

Hi All,

I ordered some parts from HandA earlier this week for my upcoming oil and diff fluid change. I got my S used a couple of months ago (~30K miles), and this will be my first service. I'm planning on following the guides on UnderTheHood, as this is the first time I'm doing it myself.

So a couple questions.

- I've got everything I need (filter, washers, etc.) except for the fluids themselves. I'm planning on using Mobil 1 75W-90 and Mobil 1 10w-30 for the differential and oil, respectively. I'll prob go during lunchtime to buy these. What's a good store around the south bay area with good inventory/price? I was thinking of going to PepBoys on Stevens Creek in San Jose.

- I read on other posts that I need about 800cc of the diff fluid, so I'll be getting a 1 qt. bottle. What about the engine oil? I couldn't find any information about how many quarts to get there. I guess it's such a beginner question that many people assume we all know.

Thanks for the help!

Any auto parts store (kragen, etc.) will have what you need. The costs will be similiar if not the same for all the stores. Very rarely do these high cost fluids go on sale.

You need just 1 bottle of 75w-90 for the differential. Make sure you have some sort of tubing to get the fluid in, you can't pour it.

I think you need about 5 quarts of engine oil.

Thanks for the info.

Even though the search is down, i just googled site:s2ki, and found:

I'll probably get 6 just in case.

Ok couple things ALWAYS ALWAYS...take the fill plug out before you take the drain plug out if(sorry I just have to say it, some people have taken the diff drain plug out and couldn't get the fill bolt out). Diff fill bolt is a pain to get too. You'll need to make sure you have the correct wrench for the diff.(unfortunately I forget the size right now but it's in the guide) If you don't you won't be able to get to the fill bolt out.

It was like a 23mm wrench for the fill and 21mm socket for the drain. Or 25mm and 23mm. Something like that.

Pep Boys is good, they should have the Mobil 1 75W90. I haven't seen it at Kragen's before.

I was actually able to pick up the 75W90 and 10w30 today, both at Kragen's. I went to the one on 82/Almaden off 880 in San Jose.

Picked up the tubing for the diff fluid too.

Thanks again.

hey Gee,

I need to change my fluids too. If you don't mind, I like to come by and watch. I met you at the last Boba meet in Milpitas.
