Can't do traffic school because I got a ticket in CA around 14 months ago. The state needs $ I get that but I don't think 75 in a 70 is out of the norm in CA. The cop wasn't using a radar gun.
While some things might be the norm, that doesn't mean they're legal. Most roadways critical rates are 4mph above the posted limit, which gives you a buffer of protection against your average over-zealous cop. Not only did you admit to going faster than 74mph, you were 'clocked' doing 82. Either you got hit by a radar/laser gun, or you got paced. In any event you already admitted there was fog on the road, you should know that in the event of fog (or any visibility reducing weather) the speed limit isn't necessarily what's posted on the road.

You were speeding under normal conditions, so you definitely were speeding in foggy conditions.

You honestly don't have a snowballs chance in hell to fight that.

you just said this is your second ticket in 10 yrs...

what was the cop using to know you were doing 82?
I got a ticket in 2000, then nothing until late 2009. With this new ticket that makes two tickets in the last ~10 years.

I'm sure of my speed because my cruise control was set to 75 and my GPS was showing 74mph. I drove like this for the entire trip from Seattle. I'm assuming that the CHP officer paced me but was confused why he wrote me up for 82 when I hadn't driven that fast all day.

Probably a slim chance to fight the ticket but just wanted to see if anyone here had used a traffic lawyer to help with a ticket and had a recommendation. I'm not saying the CHP officer lied (he acted very professional) but think he might have made a mistake on my estimated speed.

Majeed Samara in burlingame is a good traffic lawyer. I know he deals with cases in San Francisco and San Mateo counties. Doesnt hurt to give his office a call.
