You need to treat a radar detector like a BVR device and learn to start scanning properly. 10 years without a speeding ticket and no radar detector. Got one last year, and it's helped for cops beyond visual range, but most of the time I see the cop before he flicks on radar or laser.

Recently on a trip back from the bay it worked well at night, but frankly I'm not sold on the super expensive ones. Most of the time the radar goes off, and I mean most of the time, you don't need the warning, you already see the cop. If you don't see the cop you need to start scanning, you cannot 'buy' the skill here.

Getting your ticket lowered from going 83 to 75 mph isn't going to be that much different. If you don't have any violations/points on your driving record, you should consider just paying the ticket and doing traffic school so your insurance doesn't go up. You can also show up to court and ask the judge to reduce your speeding ticket and ask to do traffic school, it all depends on the judge. If you have already done traffic school within the last 18 months, I would just do the trial by written declaration, you have nothing to lose then.

A written declaration seems ideal but that site has gotten a lot of bad reviews for scamming. I'm currently doing a lot of research on a written declaration. Thanks for the heads up.

Ex-Wife wrote in a nicely written declaration. 30 days later it was just flat out declined. Not sure the success rate of a write in.

Thanks and good point brought up. With respect to lowering it from 83 to 75, it will at lease save me some money. Something is better than nothing.

Your definitely right and I'm typically good with spotting cops. I just got caught slipping this time around. It was late and at night time. Either way I don't think a radar detector will be a bad investment as a back up.

Well a few years back, I got my first ticket for going 10 over and it was like $250. 2 years later, I got one for going 88 in a 65, so 23 over and it was right under $400. I don't how busy you are, but you might want to consider if it's worth showing up to court (missing work?) to save $100 or less (It's not guaranteed and you might lose the driving school option). Goodluck!

Making it to court shouldn't be a problem for me. I'll just take a day of leave (i'm in the military). Apparently 1-15 miles over is around $240 dollars 15-25 miles over is $360ish. Something along those lines. I wrote it down earlier. Thanks for the support.

Anyone use Waze?
Bummer. Sorry to hear James. I'm guess he was here when he got you on radar. http://goo.gl/maps/k65Kk. Right under the sign. This is a pretty popular spot for them.

I'm on Waze.

I have the 9500i and I like it a lot. Its got pretty good range and I love the ability to lock out false positives.

I'd take it to court assuming you go/lose the written declaration. If you can, try and change the trial date before the deadline to do so. The more paperwork you can create, the more likely it will either not make it to the cop, or won't work for his schedule.

Thanks for the support and yes, that's exactly where he got me. I should have known better cause I see them out there in the mornings as well. Have you seen the laser jammer that goes with that detector? I posted a link above.
