My ex-gf is an accountant/CPA. She's never had a problem finding a job and she's often asked back. Her pay is double mine and I told her I should have become an accountant. But she doesn't like it. Long hours and little free time. She recalls a friend making 30K in 1 month. Nice.
CPA do make big $ but they do their time up front. Your first year+ at one of the big 4 making $50K doing 80+ hrs a week and constantly traveling,... no spank-you

Sorry Jeff,.. Since these are head hunters, they are generally asking me to fill Accounting positions.

they work you like mad the first year or two. if you can live like that for a few years before you make it up the ladder far enough, then maybe it's for you. but just remember month end and during tax season you're back to those 24/hr day work schedule. you make a lot, but you work a lot too...

that's why you get an IT audit position @ big 4 and work significantly less & get paid more

^^ Yeah but you aren't anywhere near as marketable in the IT section after you leave as you are with Audit. Audit hours suck (I just became a senior at KPMG) but companies are very willing to hire you when you leave after a few years. My friend just left for new job, he'll be making 150k~ at Morgan Stanley. A senior a year above me just left and she'll be making about the same at Google with guaranteed 8 hour days.

btw Jeff

Internship really don't get you a real feel of the job. I did my internship with the Big 4 back in the day and it was NOTHING like the internship when I started full time with them. When you are an intern, they shelter you... and for good reason. You lack the experience and they WANT you to come back after the internship (not scare you away). The reality is that if you want to be in public accounting, you jsut have to be mentally prepared to carry the stress of the job. When it's busy season and when it's crunch time, you are going to work till midnight for months.

For anyone that wants to do accounting. An accounting firm is the best place to start. You don't want to be processing AP and AR the rest of your life. When you are too specialized, you don't have room to move up.

Having said that, it is a rewarding job in the long run. You put in the hours early and when you leave, you will be very valuable in the market place.
