I have an question. I've seen people leave the front license plate
in the front dash. Does this count? I've seen this setup a lot in SF.

thanks.

I don't know why my wife removed the plates. I actually thought it was really wierd, but who am I to argue....

Regarding putting the plates in the front window...

CVC Section 5201: License plates shall at all times be securely fastened to the vehicle for which they are issued so as to prevent the plates from swinging and shall be mounted in a position to be clearly visible, and shall be maintained in a condition so as to be clearly legible. The rear license plate shall be mounted not less than 12 inches nor more than 60 inches from the ground, and the front license plate shall be mounted not more than 60 inches from the ground.

Full text is available here

There used to be rules for posting your own license numbers. i.e. if you followed the CVC rules for character height, color, etc, you could make your own, but I can't find it any more.

Elsewhere it should still be a fix-it, but many municipalities now charge $20 for fix-it tickets.
The fix it fine for SF is $30 bucks I'm pretty sure. The last time I got a front plate ticket was actually from a meter maid while the car was parked. Didn't even know they could do that....

I got 7 no front plate tickets last year in SF and some are $10 and some $20 fixing tickets. No more than that.
