I have the same problem on capt expway the usual ricer or bucket. I just let them act a fool and sometimes just give them the 
at the light and watch their reaction.

It's out there and has been discussed on calguns numerous times. If you want to have a loaded mag that's up to you. I wouldn't risk it. Having ammo in the trunk near a firearm is still sketchy but you can't do it. I'm jus saying it's not a good idea to have a mag with ammo in it in the car or without a ccw. You're entitled to think otherwise but I wouldn't want to get caught like that. We're in CA where we live with the most strictest rules.
