I I know that this probably isn't the best place to ask, but everyone here has quite a wealth of knowledge I thought I'd give it a try.

Is there a year to avoid when considering these cars? Where would you go looking for information or cars for sale?

check out a magazine called excellence, lots of alternatives in there

 

check the porsche dealer on stevens creek, also there are a bunch of smaller euro dealers all along there, gt motor sports, stevens creek european (i had a bad experience there with an m3), ect ect... try craigslist too for a realistic value of the car ur looking for...autotrader is ok anc cars.com is ok too...

as far as a year to avoid, i have no idea if there is a bad year for a porsche, generally if there is a model change, avoid the first year of the newest model, ive heard its the one that has the most probs... but i dont know when the last change for the carrera was...
