check out www.opentable.com check which of their restaurants are on the MICHELIN rated list. those are always good. and www.restaurant.com to purchase discounted certificates to certain ones.
my faves: ISA on steiner street french shared plates
LA FOLIE on polk for great high end and innovative french
AZIZA on geary st for california/morrocan food
some top end restaurants I'd try if I had a couple hundred bucks to spend on a dinner:

Aqua is always great - I've been there many times and though it's pricey, I've always had great meals. Under new-ish chef Laurent Manrique, it's become even more French and a touch less seafood oriented - it's a real gem. Mmmm....foie gras - probably the best I've had anywhere.
I've been to Michael Mina twice (he's the former head chef of Aqua) and found the food quite unique. It's even more expensive that Aqua, but his 3 types of preparation for each type of food is pretty cool. Is it as worth it for the money as Aqua? No, but it's a bit more creative and innovative that Aqua is.
