Default safe places to live in the bay area

my buddy will be coming to the bay area for a year or so for work and he wants to start looking for an apartment. he's basically looking for cities or neighborhoods that are safe and not too expensive. basically, he will be spending most of his time away from his apartment and do not want to worry about his place or car getting broken into. he prefers to find a place in the east bay (but not necessary) that is within 20 miles from SF. given that i don't know the cities and/or neighborhoods of the bay area too well, i was hoping some of you guys can give some suggestions. i was thinking of the walnut creek area, but i don't know what rent is like in that area.

I live in Dublin and being here over a year and seeing other cities I would probably stick with Dublin, Livermore, Danville, Orinda, and Walnut Creek. More south I liked Mountain View...

Don't forget Pleasanton. Not cheap in general, but a very safe place to live.

Yeah... Pleasanton is awesome (I live there) but may not be the best for the night life needs of a young person. Jason may be better to answer this. It's also 45 miles from the city.

If I was working in SF and was single I'd live in the City or South SF (Brisbane etc. a little pricey but awesome location. On the East bay I think Walnut Creek is also a good choice. A little more life and also has the ease of a BART station (so does Pleasanton/Dublin/Livermore)

It definitely doesn't have the night life, but it has several good malls, a lot of good restaurants and an IMAX.
