Ouch...I feel you. The GPW was unregistered for 3 years which = (3 years registration + 3 years late fee) = $987
I don't understand why mine is so high.

Use tax since I bought the car out of state. That was the main reason my registration was so high.

I recently bought a 2006 LBP with 51k from the auction. Its a thief recovery, missing just the seats and driver door panel. I paid 9k for it from the auction. IAAI. DMV charger me $964 sales tax and $416 fees. I almost had a heart when the DMV told me the bill was $1,380.
