Road Trip 2012
So I wanted to write about this sooner, but had plans to make an epic video. Turns out that's gonna take longer than I thought, so I figured I'd dump out my thoughts while they're still in my head. Mac's SoCal road trip thread provided me the bump I needed to start writing this up.
I started planning in August of 2012... finally got time to do it in September. When I moved out here from Missouri in 2010, I basically followed I-80 except for a detour to Yellowstone and Missoula, Montana. So I wanted to do something slightly different.
This was the original plan.
About 5,000 miles spread over 13 days. Just me and my S2000.
The results were amazing and I'll be recounting them slowly over the next couple days or weeks in this thread. But here's a nice preview.

Day 1 (Sept. 13): San Francisco to Truckee, CA
I didn't want to wear myself out so I made the first day pretty easy - less than 200 miles, all interstate, and a good part of it beautiful Sierra goodness.
I took my sweet time loading up. A big part the reason I was taking the trip by car rather than by a plane like most sane people was because of the sights along the way, so I didn't want to forget any of my camera stuff. Ain't cheap to replace. A full trunk and a full front passenger footwell and I was ready.

A quick top-off of tire pressure and I was on my way by noon. This bit of I-80 is probably familiar to most of you so I won't bore you guys with it or the requisite Last Supper In-N-Out trip.
I-80 was in way better shape than what I expected after last driving it on my way to SF in 2010. It was practically clay+gravel at that point for some reason.
It probably goes without saying that I had my top down most of the trip.

(plastic box full of snacks and drinks, gray bag full of Canon equipment.)
Had no problem making it to my hotel before dinner so I checked in and decided to check out some of the roads around Tahoe. The highway over the pass near Mount Rose caught my eye.
It wound up being exactly what you would expect from the map - long fast inclines on the westward side become fun twisties on the eastward side. A nice way to wind down the day and use some gears other than 6th after a day on the interstate. Very fun since it was a weekday and there was minimal traffic.

After playing around on the eastward bit for a while, I caught a nice sunset over the lake with a couple from Connecticut.

And as the light faded further, I headed back down to the lake to catch the last few rays of light at the beach.

A quick late dinner and a splash of $4.80/gallon gas to get me to Reno, and Day 1 was in the books.
