Recommendations wanted: Brake shop in East Bay?
My breaks are getting all mushy. It's been 12,000 miles since I had my 36K service done at the Honda dealer. They said they changed the brake fluid, but I don't even know if they really did it. I've also been driving the car hard and braking hard. I prefer not to DIY.
Can you recommend a place to get my brake fluid changed and also to install new brake pads? It would be nice if they carried some better-than-stock pads for me to pick from.
Thanks!

The reason why your pedal is mushy is because the system needs to be bleed. If you have a place to work on your car, I can help you bleed your brakes. Also, it would be a good idea to measure your pads before spending money that might not need to be spent.
If you don't track your car, the stock pads are sufficient. Otherwise high performance pads will dust like a mofo. High performance pads will cause your wheels to become solid black in 2-3 days of just moderate driving, you won't like that.

Thanks for the offer, but I'v got to pass. I have zero interest in fixing it myself.
I will measure the pads though. They've got almost 50K on them.
Can better-than-stock pads help you stop faster?

^ Pads can be used until there is 3mm or less of lining thickness on them.
High performance after market pads resist brake fade. There are many brands and types of pad material out there. It all depends on what your gonna use them for.
Do high performance after market pads help stop the car faster? That is a good question. Yes and no. Keep in mind that the tires play a major role in shortening your car's stopping distance. Will after market pads shorten your stopping distance? I would say probably not. Like I stated, high performance after market pads resist brake fade, therefore, if you plan on repetitive hard braking, then you would benifit from a high performance after market brake pad.
If you hypothetically put a set of slicks on your car, it WILL stop faster. This would in turn, cause the OEM pads to fade sooner. More grip means you can brake harder without anti-lock engaging meaning your entire braking system is working harder.
If your just running stock tires that say, have 5-10k miles on them, high performance brake pads will probably not reduce your braking distance. They will however resist brake fade.
OEM is fine for the street.
