I got 3 electric cars (All Tamiya), and basically it's just charge and go. What about Nitro? Anything else I have to look for? So far, all I know is you have to clean the engine very often due to Carbon build up.. But what else?
At the minimum:
- Fuel (the % nitro % oil is a whole other topic... use the manufacturer's recommendation).
- Spare glow plugs.
- A glow igniter and spare batts for that.
- After-run oil.
- Some cleanup spray (they make stuff especially for road cars) and rags.
I'd also recommend a metal gear steering servo if you're not already using one of those in your Tamiyas.
Of course you'll be dealing with a throttle servo instead of an ESC, and consequently no 'reverse' If you flip the car over, the engine will lean out and stall. If you have a radio problem, the car might go ghostrider on you, so stay away from people and traffic.
You don't really need to 'clean' the engine per se. But after-run oil is probably a good idea. Try to keep it running on the rich side (blue smoke is your friend). Honestly, I've broken all my RC stuff waaay before the engine wore out from lack of maintenance. I tend to thrash my stuff pretty good, but that's the reason I have them... disposable fun.
Just to give you some idea of where I'm coming from: I used to see old farts at the flying field who would spend an hour or more masturbating their plane, then another hour shooting the shit, then maybe fly for one tank's worth. Then masturbate the plane some more for another hour and shoot the shit some more. Some guys would show up with like 4 beatuiful planes, lay them all out behind their truck and NOT FLY AT ALL, just stand around and talk for hours! Meanwhile, my buddy and I would show up, be in the air in like 5 minutes, fly until the limits on the receiver packs in every plane, pack up and go home. Not enough hours in the day to take RC too seriously IMO.
