Default question for renters

I have been living in the Bay Area for a while now - getting sick of my small space. I am looking for a larger place.
Where do you guys look online? I have tried looking at Rent.com and Craigslist. I think I want to rent a house and most of the listings there are apt or condos.
I want to start early so that I'll have alot to time to research/look & get a feel for price.
thanks in advance.

If you have any realtor/broker friends, ask them. Classified section in the newspaper should have some. Craigslist is probably the easiest way to find something though.

What I did was use rent.com and also drive around a specific area where I wanted to live and actually found a place which I've been living for 2+ years.

depends on what your looking for, keep in mind some of the older owners of homes are not as technical so they do it the old skool way and just post a sign out front, the only way to find these is to pick the neighborhood you want to live in drive around until you find one. thats what i've done.

thanks but I wont move till next May. I'd hate for your friend's parents to do all this work unless I'm more serious. I'm just starting now to get an idea.

I'm looking in San Mateo & Belmont.
I'm looking for 2bedroom (a house with a garage is preferred). I think those run in the neighborhood of $2000+ a month.

im from that area, and your estimate is about right. but you can find some in the 1400 - 2000 range in a decent neighborhood.
