Potenza S-03s
hello to all.....
got a quick question for all of u that has been through a set or a few sets of tires. i'm replacing my first rear sets....got the S-02s again. i've heard that S-02s r going obsolete soon. i've also read some reviews on tirerack for the S-03s...they seem pretty good with better tread wear. any suggestions on other possible replacements?

I'm sticking with the S-02 as long as Tire Rack can keep shipping them. I like the way they behave and prefer to live by the adage: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Second question (OK, I didn't think ahead): Assuming I don't mount the tires myself, then after adding in the mounting/balance charges, is there any real savings by buying tires from Tire Rack? If so, how much are we talking about?

1.) TireRack will ship directly to a bunch of shops -- there's a list on their site. When I checked against my zip code, I had half a dozen within 10 miles. Pick the one you want and call them, BEFORE you order the tires. Then place your order, and let the shop know when they'll be in and schedule an appointment to get them installed. Really straightforward. All the shops on tirerack's list have done this a zillion times, they know the routine, they'll make it easy for you.
2.) Don't remember how much, but it was a significant savings. AND I had zero hassle about prices, models, sizes, etc. No horses***t from some sleazy sales person trying to convince me that their house brand was sooooo much better.

I had the dealer install my tires when I had the 11,000 mile service on the car. There are several other tire shops in my area that I would also trust to do it. Since I also own a minivan and a pickup truck it was no big deal to drop the tires off with the car.
The reason I will continue to get S-02 tires from Tire Rack is that I can trust that I get the right tire, unlike any of the local tire dealers. They're also faster. The set shown behind my car took two days to arrive. When I destroyed one 300 miles later, I had the replacement the day after I ordered it. I guess it helps that the Tire Rack warehouse is in Reno, just four hours away.
Lower tire prices are just a bonus.

For you guys who got SO-3 installed, I was standing at the back of the car and looked at the new SO-3 with 245/45/16. They look narrower than the SO-2. Is it because of the tread patterns?
