IMO its safer than vallejo.
Benicia, Cordelia, Suisun City, Fairfield, Dixon, American Canyon may be areas to look into. The ONLY reason I wouldn't say Napa is that you'd have to drive through most of the cities listed above as it is and the rental/purchasing prices will be higher.
Nightlife sure isn't hopping in the Vacaville area. You'd most likey drive to the city (SF) or Sacramento. Davis has more bars with college co-eds (not that it's something to complain about )
good luck on the job. You'll enjoy Cali!

yea vallejo isn't that bad. it could get better, just stay away from the crest or in the general marineworld area.
feisty's right, dont go napa, since its in the middle of nowhere, american canyon housing is still pretty expensive, vallejo is ok, benicia cool too, best look into suisun, fairfield, and vacaville. if you go hercules you'll have to pay toll everyday too.

Yeah... you want to be north of the Benecia Bridge. $3 a day really adds up!
Btw, an example of a h*llish commute is shotiable's drive. Traveling 40 miles in 90-120 minutes is pretty grueling (to me).
I commute from Antioch to San Ramon every day. That's about 38 miles - which seems like forever during rush hour(s). When I drive my hybrid, it takes roughly 60-70 minutes. When I drive the S2000, I can count on a commute lasting about 90-120 minutes.
I'm not sure what the traffic is like going northbound over the Benecia Bridge (Hercules to Vallejo) in the morning, but I see a lot of cars heading in that direction while I go south. I just naturally assumed that it gets rough up near the toll plaza because there are five or six lanes that squish down into about three... if I remember correctly.

Oh yes, and I forgot to mention that Vallejo is only about 31 miles from San Francisco. If there is no traffic, I can usually make it between Antioch and SF in 45 minutes. Antioch is about 45 miles northeast of SF.

What kind of commute time am I looking at if I go Hercules.
I'll be moving back to Hercules myself and my buddy may be convinced to take in a roommate since he has a 5-bedroom by himself. It's a decent area.
