quick question about this, do you know if you have to move to D.C. if you want to work as a linguist? or can you work in your immediate city (for the FBI)?
I think they started sending newbies to smaller cities and then as you progress you will go back to big metro towns. However when I was applying two years ago. They said people from major city like NY, LA, etc will have better chance to choose their home town.

Just out of curiousity, can you pursue a career as a CHP or some type of law enforcement with any kind of criminal background?
If you're talking felonies, then no. You're pretty much DQ'd, along with certain drugs.

Certain misdemeanors are acceptable.

Is it hard to get into? yeah. The ratio is about 2 out of every 100 applicants.

LOL at whoever said SJPD was racist. Check out how diverse their department is.

Well I'm going to worry about finishing my undergraduate degree for now, which will take another 3 years or so. And after I'm out, i'm going straight to the academy. Hopefully its not as bad as everyone says ... I'll do a couple ride alongs as well.
If conditions are the same when you're ready as they are now, I would highly suggested trying to get hired before you enter academy. That way you're getting paid to learn and you'll also have a position once you get out. Going in as an "independant" is expensive and you might finish and find yourself still without a job, or unable to get a job because of background or poly, etc.

One thing to keep in mind, is most agencies in Ca. if your planning on being hired here, look more towards having completed your POST exam PRIOR. In some areas, you can simply go through a training course instead. My dad was in the SFPD for 28 years, and I was planning on going after I completed my military career, but my military career cut everything short, so now I have to find something else to do

I applied for OPD in August of last year. I flew by the POST Written Exam, passed the Oral Board Interview, received and filled out my 30+ page PHQ (Personal History Questionnaire), passed the Physical Exam, passed the Psychological Written Exam, passed the Wonderlic Exam.. (by this time, everything was looking great for me "I Thought")... Then when they reviewed my PHQ, I received a letter from the recruiting office stating that I was disqualified because of my Background... I had to send them a letter to question the reasons for their decision.. A few weeks later, the Sgt. that made the decision to disqualify me told me all the reasons and I understood why.. He told me that they liked me and that he'll recommend me the next time I re-apply in 2009. All police agencies have strict standards and guidelines to abide by.. I mean, if they didn't have certain standards, any chump off the streets would be hired...

If you have any questions about the hiring process or any about any stage of the process I've talked about... Feel free to contact me... I will do what I can to help you out.. Good Luck!
