An awesome place to talk to people about cameras is San Jose Camera They've got some really good prices and give you some great tips. I just recently found out about them earlier this year and i've already bought a few lenses from them.

oops didn't read that they weren't auto focus...i guess that's a big hinderance. i suppose most of my $.02 still stands though regarding experience and what not.

btw, ritz prices have always been high for me in the past...before you drop the hammer on getting it there, check out the standard photo sites that are very reputable (adorama.com, buydig.com etc).

my advice is to keep those lenses mainly cuz theyre prime lenses and go nikon. if the glass is fungus-free and no chips etc..ie in prestine condition, you can get very good pictures out of them (manual focus not a factor). you can always add to your collection with autofocus lenses as you grow. Prime lens = big money/sharper than zoom lenses(usually).

for what its worth: if i didnt already have a bunch of canon lenses, i would have go nikon.

I'm 90% sure I'm going to get the Nikon D80 SLR body camera along with one autofocus lense.

Now my question is if I were to buy one lense, which one should I get for all around use?

you also might want to check out costco. they usually have good deals, especially with camera/lens packages.
I know back in dec, they had a deal with a d80 + 2 lenses (18-55(?) + 55-200(?)), case, CF card for $1200(?).

Glad to hear that you are probably going with Nikon! Send me the info on your old lenses I can confirm compatibility. (I work for Nikon; sorry no hook-ups) Some of the older lenses are missing the contacts needed for the D bodies.

Also, I agree with earlier posts. Are you sure you don't want to try the D40 first? I mean... I hate to say it but I use a point and shoot, coolpix S6, more than my DSLR.

this is what I posted from earlier so tell me if you need more specific model numbers or where I can find this info on the lenses....only 2 of them are Nikon, the rest are Sigma lenses.....if it helps I can take a picture of the lenses tonight and post it up here.


1) Sigma 400mm, 1:5.6 (Telephoto lense)

2) Sigma 600mm, 1:8 (Mirror Telephoto lense)

3) Sigma 70-300mm, 1:4 - 5.6 (DL Macro lense)

4) Nikon 135mm, 1:2.8 (Portrait lense)

5) Nikon 50mm, 1:1.8 (Series E)


I'm headed to San Jose camera after work today and bringing all my lenses so they can look it over and determine compatibility, etc....they are all in mint condition btw

I already have a slew of point/shoot cameras including a few Nikon Coolpix units including my latest S6 and a Canon SD series. They're great in sunlight but suck in low light conditions and always need a tripod
