Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance
#14
After having attended Pebble probably 20 times, I don't go anymore. I've seen every important classic car there many times; only their owners change. Don't care for its increasing gimmickry, like showing hot rods. But my main reason for staying home is the immense, Champagne-sipping/cigar-puffing crowd. The Concours used to be a get-together. Now it's an "event." In fact, its ambience now is much like an olden-days Bill Graham Presents "Day on the Green" concert. (Can we say "cluster---k" here?) Except Bill's drinking water was a lot cheaper. IMO Paris is the "best" classic car show in the world, tho speaking French probably improves the experience. BTW, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts is currently showing 20 of Ralph Lauren's best classics, including his Bugatti Atlantique Type 2, one of my all-time classic car favorites. Probably big crowd there too, grumble, grumble...
