For the actual valve adjustment, besides the usual screwdriver, wrench, feeler gauge, is there anything else special that is needed like shims, etc.?

SHIMS!!!!
I owned a Daimler Sovereign some years ago which was a shim job to set the tappets, an absolute nightmare. The best part was walking into any garage and mentioning tappet adjustments and watching the mechanics all run off!

Breaking bolts? That's wierd. You did use a Helms manual and a torque wrench, right?

Nope just what you listed and plenty of patience. It can be very tedious.
