Hey guys. My name's John, and my wife and I are moving to the South Bay in July. I just sold my e36 M3 and am looking for an S2K. Want some high-revving, top-down driving goodness for the great climate.

I'm from the midwest and currently living in NC, so I am wondering how I can find out more about the dreaded CARB laws. Can someone help me out? What can you do to an S2K performance wise, if anything?

Thanks.

Hi John

You will enjoy Cali - although it will be very hot in July! You might want to check out DMV's website (http://www.dmv.ca.gov) as well as the site for the Air Resources Board (http://www.arb.ca.gov/html/lawsregs.htm)

Performance wise, you can do whatever you want as long as it has a CARB approved sticker/number. As a general rule, exhaust systems are fine as long as you haven't modified/bypassed the cat and it isn't above a certain db level. Of course, that is subject to whoever is testing you

Turbo and SC systems are ok as long as they have a CARB approved sticker.

Thanks for the info. I'll check out the links you posted. I am glad to know there's a possibility for a boosted CARB-friendly s2k. Are there certain kits that are CARB-friendly?

I'm torn between an s2k and an M roadster. I do love BMWs, but the cost of ownership and reliability of a Honda is enticing. Cali is, after all, very expensive

I can't help you on the turbo end, since I never considered it for my car. I just had the Comptech supercharger installed on my car, and it's CARB approved. I had the luxury of taking my S up to Comptech to have them install it rather than a third-party shop. Unfortunately, they are going out of business, so I don't think you'll be able to do the same.

I believe the Vortech supercharger is also CARB approved.

If you shop around in the For Sale section, I'm sure you'll find a lot of FI kits. Just make sure you do your research. Smog is a pain to pass if you don't have the CARB certification!
