Newark man, 20, injured while apparently racing
By the Mercury News
A 20-year-old Newark man was critically injured Saturday night after losing control of his car while apparently racing another motorist on Interstate 880 in Fremont, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The name of the Newark man, who remained hospitalized at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, was not available Sunday. The other driver, described as a 36-year-old San Jose man, also was not identified. He suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for treatment.
Authorities were called at about 9 p.m to I-880 north of Auto Mall Parkway, where they found the Newark man's 1999 Acura overturned near a sound wall along the right shoulder. An unidentified passenger in the car suffered minor injuries, according to the CHP.
Moments before, witnesses reported seeing the Acura in a ``speed contest'' with a 1995 BMW. Both vehicles were reportedly traveling at 95 miles-per-hour in the northbound lanes. The driver of the Acura lost control and veered into the BMW, sending both cars sailing into the sound wall, the CHP reported.
Authorities ask anyone with information to call the Hayward-area CHP at (510) 489-1500.
