Default need stereo guru help

i got one 2 farad dp audio cap from frys.

i hooked up the - to the - on batt. then the 1kohm resistor in series to the + on the batt. all goes well until it gets to 5v. it will just stay there and wont go any higher. my understanding is that it should be fully charged to 12v or battery voltage before installing. also if i take the connections off. take a voltage measurement with a multimeter then wait and take another measurement. the voltage would drop as if the cap isnt holding its charge. the cap shouldnt drain without anything connect to it?

i returned the cap and got another one and it did the same thing. is there something im missing.

thx

You're only supposed to put the capacitor inline for a few minutes, its just for an initial charge. Then you would connect the + of the cap to the lead from the battery, then the - of the cap to the + of the amp.

That's what I remember I did before.
