They can't be considered standardized when manufacturers are free to put any number on the side of the tire they wish.

Also keep in mind the rating on the RE050 was assigned back in '04 and hasn't been to the best of my knowledge updated to reflects its current position within Bridgestone's lineup.
Ehhh.. this be just a tad bit erroneous, but mostly true. So they can be understated, but not overstated. The rating has to be documented and justified to the NHTSA (National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration). If I remember correctly (I haven’t had to think of this in years since we sat at the table with a tire manf. for a sponsor on the formula car), tire manufacturers actually purchase and compare to monitored tires from NHTSA, then use it as a reference along with their test documentation for justification to their rating. I remember asking for test data (to figure out what tire forces were recorded at different slip angles) and this wasn’t available to us, but the groups in colleges saved up enough to get a test rig together and test/get information, particularly on Goodyear and Hoosier race tires. This whole process is now part of a consortium to which teams have to pay money to get information shared with them. Something like $500 a couple years ago. Alright, I digress..

Believe me, I'm not here to get into a pissing match with everyone. Sorry for the misspelling though, I meant tread. Jeez, you guys are getting really really picky. You know what I meant.

The tread wear rating can only be compared to the manufacturers lineup and should not be compared between different manufacturers.

BTW

Thread is what makes up the clothing you wear.

Tread is the raised pattern on the tire that meets the road surface.

It's the only reference I have until I wear a set of RS-3s. Not good enough of an explanation?

I must say though, that in a split difference of 300 to 140, I don't know of any manf. that would grossly underestimate their tire's wear rating (RS-3s here) by nearly 2+ times. So it is relevant to give the OP a good idea of the differential.

really, rs3 over z1 even in wet? hm i pmed you! you never got back to me
Hey! Sorry, I just got back from Singapore/Malaysia about 1am today... well, 24 hours ago now. Been doing my best to quickly beat this jet lag, but had to nap mid day.

Don't have any experience with them in the wet, but in the dry.. definitely. The Z1s were pretty good for me in the wet, but there are other guys that drove on the track (I have the experience of just one wet track day in the wet with Z1s, and they held their own. I was quite... conservative ). The RS-3s are a bit new, haven't hit a storm yet. I'll let you know when I go butt wild in the rain with them.

what the hell is this thread about?

I'm getting RS3's next. But I wouldn't recommend them to someone who doesn't track their car. There are cheaper, quieter, and longer lasting tires that grip just fine for a street car...like the sumitomo's.
