what's a guy to do

$25k seems little too much for a ring, I would think $15K is a reasonable amount. Well, it all depends on your income and net asset. If your girl is happy and you can comfortably afford a $25k ring, why not?

3 month net income after tax is so much less than 3 month gross income, sometimes is 1 to 2 ratio.

even I think 25k is a bit much for an engagement ring.. but then again i'm no where near getting married so what do I know haha. i think ball park 15k is about right for a decent sized nugget with good clarity and quality. I think my sister's rock was about that much and her rock was a decent size.

logically i'd think that would best go toward a down payment on a house, but i guess logic doesn't apply here, but ego might

Blue nile is a rip off. It exist for those people that don't like dealing with jewelry stores.

I think a nice 1.5 carat princess cut or round cut diamond in the highest clarity would be something I'd get.

Damn..just checked Blue Nile and a 1.5 carat, colorless, and FL/IF clarity is around $30K.

Curious to know what a smaller jeweler would charge for a stone that size/quality.

I would gather about half that. Hard to say though because colorless and flawless diamonds of that size are extremely rare and really not worth the money since one or two steps lower in the scale look the same. IMO.

thanks for all the replies...

We've been looking every day for 2 weeks.. she didn't like any except for the ones at Tiffany. $4k for the wedding band, $18k for the engagement ring.

the only thing is that the engagement ring is only a 1 ct.. I want a bigger one that still has the same color and brilliance for the same price!

she doesn't care how much the ring costs, but I care about how good the ring looks..
