What's wrong with the area? I don't see any problems.
Actually if OP is looking for reasonable place to rent, Sunnyvale would be good. Actually where I live is pretty reasonable.

Hey guys..
I am planning on relocating to the San Jose area next month for a job. I know the cost of living is insane here, and trying to get a feel for the area before I move down.
My questions is....which surrounding area is best to live/commute from? I'll be working in Cupertino, and I'd like to have a 10-30 minute commute (at the most), suburban environment, while paying $400-600 in rent. Obviously, I'll probably have to find a roommate or a house renting out a room, but other things considered, which area is the best value?
Places I'm researching so far...Sunnyvale, Saratoga, Campbell...
Any recommendations?

I'm living in a great suburban neighborhood in Milpitas because of the VALUE. It's only 10 miles away from Sunnyvale/Cupertino, a nice commute on 280.
Anyways, craigslist has been giving people great success. I would use that to find a rental property.

Thanks Sandy.
So the next real question: Can you live comfortably with $300,000....LOL.
I bet you I can.

if you are a single person making 200k/year your paycheck breakdown would look a little like this, assuming you are maxing out 401k and your company doesn't contribute:
Annual Gross Pay $200,000.00
Federal Withholding $44,837.00
Social Security $6,324.00
Medicare $2,675.25
California $14,636.88
CA SDI $693.58
401k $15,500.00
Net Pay $115,333.29
that leaves you with a paycheck of a little less than 10k/month. that's a good chunk of money and if you already have enough saved up to make the down payment, paying for mortgage should be a breeze. but uh, how many of us are making 200k/year? also keep in mind that most people who are out to buy a SFH already have a family, and hopefully, dual-income.
now, buying a million dollar home when your gross income is 100k and you've just started working.. that one might be a bit of a stretch.
