Moving to S.F. and not sure whether to keep the S.

if your parents live in Irvine, leave the car there for now.
after living in SF for a month, if you decide that you can live without the car, sell it then. It's much more expensive to sell then buy a car later.
also, consider investing in a hard top.

if you just talking about ghettos like projects, SF has Fillmore, Sunnydale, the Mission, Hunters Point, PY projects in chinatown & just alot of other "bad" nieghborhoods. But if your talking about getting your car jacked, its everywhere in SF dont matter which neighborhood or street its in. My cousin's homeboys car got jacked back in '04 half a block away from the bayview police station lool aint that some shit

Do you have comprehensive coverage?
There are a lot of convertibles around, but you have to come into it assuming your car will get hit. Most comprehensive coverage is $250 for vandalism.
It's a game of odds. I've seen some of the same S's parked on the street for years now without problems; on the flip side, I had mine broken into in my Berkeley apartment garage.

If it were me, and I had no covered parking, I'd sell it. You probably won't be using it that much. Second, it's not about it getting stolen or broken into -- it's the how people park in the city -- say goodbye to your bumpers.

well...i lived in sf for 2.5 years with S. i would never leave it outside over night. sf has a good mix of pro thieves and crackheads. i lived on the border of pac heights and j town. and at least every other week there would be a broken window on sutter. my friend has had his tl broken into twice and stolen once from parking outside... whats funny is the recently got a parking ticket in the mail for illegally parking in daly city on 7/23, and he reported his car stolen 7/21, and it wasnt recovered til 7/28...
but yea, like its been said before, kiss ur bumpers good bye if u park on the street on a hill. sell the S, buy a used corolla if u need a car
(if u think u can get by on muni, i encourage u to ride the 38 muni bus once...). the poor S will get chewed up and spit out.

If you have a garage and don't park your car overnight you should be okay. I tend to park in bad neighborhoods from time to time and it all comes down to the wrong place at the wrong time.
I had my s2000 emblems jacked in a nicer part of sf.
