San Jose to Gilroy isn't too bad. It at most is about a 20 minute commute without traffic. With how traffic works around here, going south from San Jose to Gilroy on Highway 101 in the mornings means not that much traffic compared to as heading north to Highway 101.

If I were you I would live in SJ. SF to Gilroy is a killer!
Plus rent will be hella cheaper in SJ. You can save hella $$$$$$ and have a phat ass crib

Wow, Gilroy is very different from SJ. Living in SF is definitely out of the question unless you are a glutton for punishment. Looks like a suburban lifestyle is definitely in your future.

Honestly, SJ is nothing like SF. Two entirely different cities with different "personalities". You've got two choices:

a.) Take the job in Gilroy -- and live in a downtown somewhere in the South Bay. Maybe live in DT San Jose in a nice loft, or rent a place on Santana Row if you want some "night life" but like I said, neither of those will be anything remotely close to SF. I'm not saying its bad, it just isn't "the city".

b.) Find a job in the city instead -- or around SF.

Just go to SF whenever you want, but don't factor that into where you live. Live close to your work.

I would live in south San Jose if I had to commute to Gilroy. It's actually a very easy commute from there, and downtown is only 20 minutes away. But if you want that urban loft thing, you'll need to live downtown and fight your way in and out every day for your commute.

Try looking into Mountain View or Palo Alto. It will be doable to Gilroy... probably take 45 min to an hour or so in the morning. Also MV and PA is a 30-35 min drive to SF. There is nothing out in Gilroy.

If you start late around 11am and get off late 8pm then the commute will be much more easier than in traffic times.
Thats the best case scenario, otherwise the forum speaks the truth.

What job are you moving to thats in Gilroy?
