AMEN!!! If the idea is to be the fastest, why the **** would anyone use anything but freestyle just opinion.
I suppose we should get rid of the hurdles as well, I mean why run and jump when you can just run.

Line Phelps up on 100m and 200m freestyle and I bet he won't win gold or even any medal at all. Since you guys know so much about swimming then you should know where Phelps standing in freestyle.
Umm, he won gold in the 200m free, and swam one of the legs of the 4 x 100m free relay.

Maybe we should just get rid of Olympic....

No matter how you look at it, it can't please everyone. Some like this sport more and some like that more. So just watch what you like or not watch at all. It's that simple.

Really fast, to trainwreck who thinks there should be only three distances for swimming, I say that there should only be three sports with balls, one with a small one (ping pong) a medium size one (tennis) and one large one (soccer). They all use round objects, so the rest must be completely useless and over kill so that people can get more medals...
ur comparison is invalid for many reasons. but i am not gonna get into analogy comparisons, thats wut the SAT verbal prep class was for.

u guys like swimming, i think its boring. imo, there is not a big enough difference in events to warrant mulptiple medals. u guys like swimming so much, hf watching breakaways in waterpolo.

on hurdles vs sprinting... hurdles adds a new element to the race. in swimming nothing is added to the race, only thing is a rule change in allowed method employed. so it is different. if they added lets say hoops at varying dephs in the water, that the swimmer would have to swim through, then imo it would be different enought to warrant sanctioning a new event.

this is why we should ditch power walking, but keep hurdls, u see the difference?

If you did any swimming, you would understand each stroke required different technique and skill. Being good in one doesn't automatically make you good in another.

Don't get me started on water polo. It's one of the most difficult sports out there to play.

You say different element, I say different method. What is hurdles but sprinting with a few jumps thrown in.

Okay, enough back and forth .

Phelps FTMFW. 8 Gold metals in '08, 14 Gold metals total. How many more in '12!!!
Not to mention the 7 WORLD RECORDS and 1 OLYMPIC RECORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i agree phelps ftw. not trying to detract from his acomplishments at all. he won 8 events at the olympics fair and square. i was merely trying to bring up the point that when nominations for best olypimpian ever are made, results should be normalized.

Fine by me if they rid of hurdles. You are right, why jump when you can run so why swimming backward and you can just swim freestyle if the object is to be the fastest at specific sport?

First of, relay don't count because it's not ALL YOU. Second he swam one of the legs of both relay, but he wasn't the anchor. If he was the fastest he would have been the anchor instead.

My mistake when I said 100m and 200m, I meant to said 50m and 100m freestyle. I do think he will probably going to break the record and will win the most medal overall in 2012.
