I would just say that you can write ANSI compliant code without an ANSI compliant compiler(As long as it's not an unsupported syntax).

And QT basically does exactly the type of layering I was refering to. That's the strategy I try to take. Although they do some hairy stuff with all the moc'ing...

If I had the equipment, I could, in theory compile my game(without changes) on:

AIX - 5.1 or later
FreeBSD - 4.11 RELEASE
HP-UX - B.11.xx or later
IRIX - 6.5.x
Linux
OpenBSD
Solaris - 9 or later
Windows 98 and Me, NT (4.0 or later), 2000, and XP
Mac OS X (10.2.8 and later)

Too bad the game would still suck!

But, if your code isn't comformant, then who tells you about it, "hey homie your code ain't compliant, y0"? That's why I was referring to compiler compliance (or lack thereof). Unless the programmer knows the standard by heart, they'd normally need the compiler to bitch before knowing something's wrong.

I could do that (probably). . . but I only have a two-seat convertible.
