R6 will probably be a second bike for me. Going to start out on a small little Ninja, either a 250 or 500. I've seen the cost of the damage from dropping an R6 and my pockets aren't deep enough yet. I'm just gonna get something cheap that I can sell back with almost no loss after a few months.

Go for a late 90's FZR. Thats what I started on and it was pretty easily handled, sits pretty low like the CBRs so you should be able to flatfoot it pretty easily. Also had more than enough power as a 600.

Plus my friend dropped it like 6 times and when it was sold you couldn't tell at all. It takes a beatin..

I've seen them on CL going from anywhere from $1500-2500

I got a super clean 92 Honda CBR F2 as my first bike awhile back. Never gave me any problems and one of the best starter bikes out there. You should be able to find one around your price range on CL. Good Luck!

Your life is the number one priority when you are rideing.

So most your money should go to life preserving gear and equipment. But you already knew that.

Gear; get the best you can find. Despite popluar belief Alpinestars and Dainese does not pass a lot of tests done with stringent standards.

Here is a sample of a reputable, almost always objective European magazine's test results of all the popluar name brand gear and some not so known names.

http://www.southbayriders.com/forums.../pic102319.pdf

Do some research on CE certification. CE is process that tests the safety value of equipment. Those who pass the test gain CE certifcation. But do research and make sure you understand it.

Warning though, some may say " passes and exceeds CE standards" but are not CE certified. So they are bsaically asking you " to take their word" on it. Up to you if you want to.

Also, besides the armor that comes in the suits being CE certified, the SUIT itself can be CE certified.

Abrasion Resistance, seam burst, etc...

Refer to the link above to see the what qualities are subjected to the test.

Im pretty sure you'll want the best protection if you ever had an accident right? thats what i thougt. Good for you!

As for bike, my vote goes too 03+ SV650 not the S model. You can always get that SEXAY R1/MV Agusta/ Ducati/ Aprilia later. Just like cars, are you gonna have one car your whole life? most people dont.

As for bike, the ninja EX250/500's have been the same since the late 1980's.
To me, logically, newer technology produces safer bikes.

Here is a link of someone asking basically the same question you are.

One guy is a track teacher (advocate for SV650) and a guy with an EX250 with a buttload of suspension mods.

Riding cheap is dangerous. Lots of people get away with it, some dont.
Ultimately ask yourself, how much are you willing to risk.

Good luck finding a bike, whatever you choose, dont look back, have fun and ride safe.

Dave
