just keep it or go to DMV and say you want to take "xxx" plates off the car but would like to keep the plates assigned to you. You have to pay a retention fee IIRC.

yeah as long as the owner has registration and whatevers on hand, it won't be a big deal. get the owner to get to DMV asap after sale to get a "Temporary Operating Permit" the square piece of paper with a number on it representing a month. so if it had a 5 on it, it would be good until the end of may.
Its safe to say that a peace officer wouldn't be d-bag enough to tow your car on the day the car's bought. just make sure that the owner does registration asap and there should be no problem.
